On February 11, 2012, the Fittest in Cape Town (FiCT) competition will take place in Cape Town after its first edition in March 2011. FiCT is the ultimate test of fitness. Similar to the CrossFit Games, which annually determine the fittest athletes on earth, FiCT is an event in which Africa’s fittest athletes compete in a variety of workouts in order to determine who is the fittest woman, man and gym/team in the mother city.
FiCT is Cape Town’s first competition that tests a broad, general fitness: Most other competitions (such as the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon or the Cape Argus Pick’n'Pay cycle tour) predominantly test capabilities in Endurance and Stamina. FiCT goes far beyond that, testing all other physical skills – namely Strength, Flexibility, Speed, Power, Coordination, Accuracy, Agility and Balance – as well. Doing well or even winning the competition by mastering just one or two of these skills will be next to impossible, but rather require balance and proficiency in all of them.
Furthermore, FiCT will be a great test to prepare for the CrossFit Games, the competition of the Fittest on Earth: The top competitors from FiCT will be amongst the favorites to qualify for a spot among the fittest athletes on the planet as well as compete for the ultimate title “Fittest on Earth”.
The Fittest in Cape Town is intended as an annual competition, providing an opportunity to actually measure physical capacity and compete in functional fitness. As such, it will not only reveal who is fittest, but give each competitor an indication of how fit they are. Even spectators will have an idea of what fitness is about – giving the event both educational and motivational qualities. FiCT is a community event promoting health and fitness – and highlighting what anyone can do to become fitter. It defies the common belief that fitness must decline with age and is best achieved by running for hours at a time.
